Search engines like Google and Yahoo are valuable resources to get some heavy traffic to you site or blog. With more traffic your site will become popular and linked faster than ever before. But, does Google/Yahoo know about your site?
Well, by default they do not know about any website. You need to do some hard-work and let Search engines know about your site. For this you need to submit your website or blog to Yahoo and Google. After you submit your website, Search engine crawlers will check your site content and index accordingly.
This is very important step for any newbie webmaster or blogger. Here is the procedure to submit your website/blog to Google:
- Open Google Webmasters Tools website.
- Login using Gmail/Google Account or create one.
- Then Click on ‘add site’ button & enter you site/blog URL.
- Now confirm the ownership of the site/blog (details below).
Here is the procedure to submit your website/blog to Yahoo:
- Open Yahoo Site Explorer website.
- Login using Yahoo Account or create one.
- Then Click on ‘add site’ button & enter you site/blog URL.
- Now confirm the ownership of the site/blog (details below).
Procedure for both Yahoo and Google is quiet similar. However, you must verify the ownership of website or blog submitted. This can be done in two ways: either by Uploading HTML file or adding a META Tag.
Uploading HTML File - When you click on verify button and select ‘Uploading HTML file’ option, you will see a link to download HTML file. Download that file and then upload that file to the root folder of your website. For example if downloaded file is XYZ.html then you need to upload it at location: www.yoursite.com/XYZ.html
Blogger users cannot use this method as they do not have FTP access to their blogs. So they need to use the second method of adding a META tag.
Add a META Tag - When you select ‘add a META tag’ option, you will be presented with code in the following format: <meta name=”verify-v1″ content=”some code here=” />
You need to copy this line and paste in ’source code’ of your website’s homepage. For Blogger users simply click on edit HTML button in dashboard and then look for META Tag in top part of the HTML file. In case you do not find it or is confused, simply paste this code below <head>tag.
In case you run a Wordpress Blog or website on your own server then uploading HTML file is quicker and better option. With above steps you can let Google and Yahoo know about your site. After this, you will surely see more people coming to your website from Google/Yahoo. A must do for a newbie!
