Microsoft BrowseRank Head on with Google PageRank


Till now Google PageRank is considered key parameter to ascertain importance of a webpage / website. Higher the PR (pagerank) higher is relative importance of web pages and higher placement in Google Search results.

While Alexa is wayward and Google PR getting brick bats for link selling restrictions – Microsoft is all ready with BrowseRank. Name is bit similar but BrowseRank promises all new approach to ascertian importance of a webpage.

Microsoft has released a research paper [link] for BrowseRank “Letting Web Users Vote for Page Importance”. Microsoft aims to add human touch to approach to determine importance of a web page.

“… The more visits of the page made by the users and the longer time periods spent by the users on the page, the more likely the page is important.” It also aims to plug leaks in Google PageRank system like pushing PR by using link farms, paid links etc.

Google hasn’t lost sleep over introduction of BrowseRank. As pointed by Cnet “… It is important to keep in mind that PageRank is just one of more than 200 signals we use to determine the ranking of a Web site,” the company said in a statement. Google PR vs BrowseRank – war has just started!
