  1. Awesome, this post really helps. Duplicates are really frustrating; this can cause other conflicts as well. On the side note using duplicate remover tool Scrubly Duplicate Remover [scrubly.com] is really effective. This automatically scan and delete those duplicates , merge compatible contacts and resolve other related conflicts.

  3. Thanks for this !

Now … what happens if the two contacts to be merged (on Gmail) have different info in the same field (for example, the contact phone number is different for the two contacts … or … one contact has an empty phone number field while the other contact has a phone number there) ? How does the merge happen here ?

This is driven by a failed attempt to join (using the MS Exchange method) an Ipad to the Gmail Contacts list – both the Ipad and the Gmail contacts existed in many cases (I know, untidy but that’s what I got from the person who asked for help) and, in many cases, the Ipad contact data was more uptodate than the Gmail contact data …

When the MS Exchange join was executed, there was no “Merge” option presented – the only options were “Don’t put the Gmail contacts on the Ipad” or “Do put them on the Ipad”. Selecting do put the gmail contacts on caused most of the contacts on the Ipad to become duplicated but with (very often) different data.

The only “solution” I have at the moment is to go through the Ipad contacts one at a time, resolve which data is correct/uptodate and remove the other version of the contact. 900+ contacts, it is taking forever !

What I really want to avoid is duplication of the Gmail contacts after the Ipad cleanup is completed.

Any help/suggestion here (beyond of course telling the person I’m helping to get their a into g) would be much appreciated.

    Thanks & Cheers,

    Pete :)

  4. Have you seen any automated way to run through the identifying of duplicates and merging?
The merge function works fine, but its a bit tedious if you have a lot of dups
